On 25 June 1864, the party comprising the Englishmen Edward Whymper and Adolphus Warburton Moore, accompanied by the guides Christian Almer and Michel-Auguste Croz, reached the summit of the Barre des Ecrins (4,101 m) in the Dauphiné. They followed what is now known as the standard route.
